Driest desert, deepest south
Chile is a 4,300-kilometre ribbon of landscapes. In the north, the Atacama — the driest desert on earth — delivers geysers, salt flats, flamingo lagoons and some of the clearest night skies anywhere. In the centre, Santiago sits between the Andes and the Pacific, an hour from the Casablanca and Maipo wine valleys and from the hillside murals and funiculars of Valparaíso. In the south, the lake district and then Torres del Paine, where granite towers, glaciers and guanacos make Chilean Patagonia one of the world's premier trekking destinations. Easter Island adds a remote Polynesian chapter for travellers with time.
