Río de la Plata calm, coast and cellars
Uruguay is small, safe and unhurried — the counterweight to a busy Buenos Aires or São Paulo itinerary. Montevideo runs on a long riverfront rambla, the Mercado del Puerto grill halls and a candombe drumming tradition you can still hear on Sunday evenings. An hour west, Colonia del Sacramento's cobbled Barrio Histórico is a UNESCO site and an easy ferry day trip from Argentina. East, the coast climbs from the beach clubs and art foundations of Punta del Este to the dunes, lighthouses and sea lions of Cabo Polonio and José Ignacio. Inland, Canelones wineries have made Tannat a serious tasting reason to leave the coast.
