Two oceans, one isthmus
Panamá is where the Americas narrow to a strip of land and two oceans almost touch. The canal is the obvious headline — the Miraflores and Agua Clara visitor centres make the engineering legible, and partial transits let you ride through the locks yourself. But the country is also Casco Viejo's restored colonial quarter, the rainforest of Soberanía within an hour of downtown, the Emberá communities of the Chagres river, and two very different island worlds: the Caribbean cayes of Guna Yala and San Blas, and the surf and reef of Bocas del Toro. Good flight connectivity makes it an easy first step into the region.
